Espresso, Caffè Latte and the rest: a quick guide to the coffee menu

A short guide to the differences between Espresso, Caffè Latte and Specialty Coffee at Pan Pan — so you know exactly what to order.

Standing at the coffee counter, the choice can sometimes be confusing — the same words show up everywhere, but they don’t always mean the same thing. Here’s a short guide to what we offer at Pan Pan, so next time you can order with confidence.

Espresso is the base of everything else. It’s a small, concentrated shot of coffee, made by pressing hot water through finely ground beans. It’s drunk quickly, in one or two sips, and is the right choice for anyone who wants a clean, intense coffee taste with nothing else in the cup. Every other drink on the menu, in essence, starts from this same shot of espresso.

Caffè Latte is what you get when steamed and frothed milk is added to that same espresso. The difference from espresso is in the amount and texture of the milk — the latte is bigger, creamier, with a mild coffee taste softened by milk. It’s the choice for anyone who wants something gentler and smoother, ideal for a longer sit with a cup in hand.

Specialty Coffee is a third path — here the focus isn’t on milk, but on the bean itself. Brewed through a filter, our Specialty Filter Coffee leaves room for the flavour of the bean to come through without being overshadowed. If you want to try something different from the usual espresso or latte, this is the cup for you.

Choosing between the three isn’t a question of which is “better” — it’s a question of the moment. A quick espresso on the way to work. A Caffè Latte for a longer sit and conversation. A Specialty Coffee when you want to pause and appreciate the coffee itself. All three start from the same care for bean quality, they just arrive in the cup in different ways.

If you’re not sure what to order, feel free to ask the team at the counter — they can briefly walk you through the taste differences and recommend something based on what you’re after in the moment. Coffee, like our bread, is something we want you to take your time with, not just gulp down on the run.

Next time you’re at Pan Pan, in Aerodrom or Kapistec Petit, look at the menu with a bit more confidence — now you know where to start.
